DCC notes 05/01/2020

DCC have leapt into the New Year with large numbers from all groups making the most of the fine weather. With the annual Mallorca spring training camp 12 weeks away training has begun in earnest for most and all are hoping the winter miles will benefit all in sunnier climes🌞😎

Notes from the road

G1 had 7 out on Sunday for a good training run over the Cappoquin, Lismore, Tallow, Youghal circuit. Home via Clashmore. A good steady controlled 90k at 31kph

It was a dark murky morning as 12 set out with Group 3 on Sunday, all answering the call of captain Anthony to get the new cycling year off to a good start. The group had an early opportunity to reach optimum cycling temperature as we climbed from Master McGrath up Colligan. We had a chance to regain our breath as we descended though Tourneena and Millstreet on our way towards Clashmore. At this stage there was a considerable head wind and those on the front had to work very hard to pull the group along. As we left Ardmore behind the old conundrum of "why did the chicken cross the road" was solved. To get out of the way of the approaching DCC cyclists of course. Chicken and cyclists all still upright, the following wind was appreciated as we headed up the punishing drag to Kiely's Cross before taking full advantage of the fast Sweep descent. A good start to the new decade with 80k completed at 26.5kph.

Group 4 set off on the first Sunday spin of 2020 out the Lismore road turning right at Master McGrath for the Colligan climb. It was a damp murky morning but the group of 10 were not deterred by the wet conditions and talk was of the cycling goals for the New Year. They continued on the Clonmel road turning left at Halfway and on through Millstreet and Modeligo back to the N72 again having met one more cyclist along the way. It was a quick spin through Cappoquin and onto Lismore for the stop meeting with Group 5 first and the Group 23K. Having refuelled it was back on the bikes for the ... See more

DCC Racing News🚴🚴

Massive congratulations to Jason Travers claiming his first cycling race victory by winning the Munster Cyclocross B League Race in Youghal today. A large field of riders started on the line hoping to burn off the turkey after Christmas on the tough, undulating course laid out on the sand dunes on Youghal’s Claycastle beach. Darren Tutty and Jason started the race together with both riders staying together for most of the first lap with Jason pacing himself in the long grass waiting to pounce. It wasn’t long before Jason moved up through the field in the 2nd and 3rd lap. Jason claimed the victory after 6 laps with a good gap back to second in a time of just over 1 hour with Darren also taking his best result of the season finishing 8th overall. Well done boys!

We had 4 youth riders in the U14 race with David Gaffney finishing 4th, Cal Tutty 5th and Eoghan Lattimore & Paraig Byrne just behind in the bunch. Credit to the boys finishing so strongly in a very tough race, doing their club proud.

Lastly but not least all credit to Isobelle Gaffney lining out in the Under 10 race taking 3rd overall.

DCC notes 30/12/2019

The Christmas holiday period was most favourable for cycling weather wise with very mild calm conditions prevailing. Lots of individual spins on St Stephens day and G3 and G4 clocking up the miles on the 27th. A big group of young and young at heart took to the trails in the Nire Valley on Friday and all groups got out at the weekend before the New Year celebrations kick in. Here are the notes from the road….🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️

The Saturday club fielded 10 for the flatish route to Fermoy. 3 turning at Ballyduff and the remaining 7 continuing on for coffee. Returning via Clondulane. A handy 100k at 30kph

Group 3 had seven on board as we rolled out from the Civic Office on Sunday as many had chosen the comfort of the bed. Seven became nine at Durrow when we were joined by two Group 1 cyclists seeking a relaxing spin. Spirits and speed were high as we cycled with a supporting wind down the Carrick road towards Clonea. Everyone was feeling very comfortable until we turned at Curraghmore into what had now become a very stiff head wind and suddenly progress became much more difficult. We battled of though Kilmac, where we lost 2 to the Greenway and on through Ballylaneen to Seefield. Now on the final leg of the spin home spirits were high and the effort increased to complete a very satisfying spin. Seventy five kilometres covered at 26.7kph.

Group 4 set off from Dungarvan on the final spin of 2019. A grey windy morning the climb up the old sweep giving much needed shelter. Back out on to the N25 it was a tough cross wind thankfully short lived as we turned right onto the mountain road for Clashmore. One of the group had to freewheel down Strikes hill due to a mechanical but made it back to Dungarvan. It was a swift descent to Clashmore and the over to Kinsalebeg and back onto the N25 again to Youghal Bridge. At JJ's we met Patrick but no coffee and JJ's still on Christmas hols. Following an unexpected detour to Youghal on ... See more
